Doremus Digital Exec Gives A Glimmer of Hope
to Kids in Ethiopia
January 26, 2011
New York‚ January 26‚ 2011: When Jessica Engle, Digital Services Associate at Doremus, the business communications agency, was five years old, her diplomat parents brought her to Ethiopia, an experience she never forgot. Fast forward to the present and Jessica is helping raise money to build a school in Ethiopia for kids who are about the same age she was when she lived there. The non-profit she is supporting is called A Glimmer of Hope. But instead of selling tickets to a lavish corporate fundraiser, Jessica is raising money by wearing the same little black dress for a month.
Through the online fundraising site: The Uniform Project, Jessica has pledged to wear the same “uniform,” a little black dress, and repurposing it every day with different accessories such as scarves, T-shirts, belts, etc., an exercise in sustainability. Then she models her creations on The Uniform Project site every day where visitors can donate to A Glimmer of Hope, which helps Ethiopian women and children living in extreme poverty to get clean water, schools, health clinics and gain micro-financing, one village at a time.
“This is a project that has touched my heart because of my strong ties to Ethiopia,” said Jessica. “Most of us, especially in New York, spend a ton of money on clothes, but a lot of those clothes never leave our closets. Money well wasted. I want to show that it’s no big deal to wear the same thing for a month, and to give the money we would have spent on a new outfit to a very good cause.”
Corporations can pledge to match donations from those received online. Thanks to this, A Glimmer of Hope receives four dollars from private backers for every dollar donated by the online public.
When asked if anyone at work noticed she was wearing the same thing every day, Jessica said they were completely oblivious. One visit to her “fashion show” of daily ensembles validates Jessica’s sense of creativity.
